Regardless of how much space you have for your closet, whether it’s just a rack in your room or an entire walk-in wardrobe, there will likely come a time where it seems like you have no room left in your closet and that everything is just constantly spilling out. And while this might be happening because you haven’t been very organized in this space, it could also just be that you have too much stuff. Luckily, there are solutions for both or either of these problems.
To help you with this, here are three things to do when your closet gets unruly.
Remove Seasonal Items
If you’re feeling like your closet space is just overstuffed, one of the first things that you should do to rectify this is to remove any seasonal items that you have stored here.
Keeping clothes and accessories that you like but can’t really wear in the current season is just a waste of space in your closet. So if there is a big portion of the things in your closet that are meant for other seasons, try to find somewhere else to store these things. You could put them in a different closet, store them under your bed, or keep them in a garage or other storage space that you have available to you. Then, when the seasons change, you can get these clothes out and pack up the other clothes that you won’t be needing for a while.
Use Guidelines To Help You Know What To Donate
Once you’ve gotten clear of the clothes and accessories that you want to keep but can’t currently wear due to the season of the year, you should then start thinking about what you could consider donating.
As a good rule of thumb, you should consider following these guidelines to help you know what things you could safely donate without really missing them, allowing you to free up a lot of space in your closet. Donating things like old costumes, dresses from wedding parties, shoes that hurt your feet, clothes you got for free but don’t love, or clothes that you have to convince yourself to wear.
Try On What You’re Considering Keeping
Now that you’ve whittled down the clothes and accessories that you’re thinking you’ll keep in your closet, before you put everything back, you should consider trying everything on once more.
While this can be time consuming and a hassle, by trying everything on in your closet before you decide to keep it, you can see if you really love how things look and feel on you. And if they don’t measure up, just add those items to your donation pile, too.
If you’re ready to tackle your unruly closet, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you declutter and streamline.
