My father and I live next door. Recently, he switched to 5G Home Internet from cable Internet, even though we were both cable Internet users. Although I was satisfied with my cable internet, I wanted to see if 5G Home Internet is worth the money. So, I ran a few experiments to find out which internet is the fastest. If you want to know which one is the quickest, then read on:
Smart Home Experience
5G Home Internet
I’d say my dad’s home is smarter than mine. He has amassed a lot of smart gadgets and devices such as Alexa, a cleaning robot, smart locks and cameras, and Amazon Smart Thermostat. All these devices are connected to his 5G Home Internet and work seamlessly.
On top of that, he frequently streams movies and sports. And not once I have seen him complaining about his internet connection.
Cable Internet
I have three smart gadgets; Amazon Echo Dot, smart lights, and smart sensors. A few months ago, I faced one problem while using them. As I installed smart sensors, I felt Amazon Echo Dot and smart lights took a few more seconds to respond. So, I browsed different Spectrum internet plans and decided to go for a plan that offered more speed. After that, I haven’t faced any problems with my cable internet till now.
So, I would say that my previous internet plan wasn’t up to the task. But, as soon as I upgraded my plan, I didn’t face any problems.
Gaming Experience
5G Home Internet
I created a private lobby with my brother on Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) and chose a high-traffic server. I was hoping that 5G would work just fine, but I wasn’t expecting it to be a walk in the park. There were no lag, latency, or bandwidth issues. While that impressed me, I wanted to make it more difficult for 5G.
So, I updated some of the apps on our smartphones while gaming. The game did lag a bit, but it didn’t make the game unplayable. In short, I was truly impressed by the load 5G was able to carry at a single time.
Cable Internet
I repeated the same process with the cable internet. Initially, the speeds were good and there was no lag whatsoever. However, as soon as I updated the remaining apps on my smartphone, the game stopped. There was so much lag that our characters couldn’t move an inch. And when they moved, they moved in circles. However, the lag ended as soon as the updates finished.
While I was testing my cable internet’s performance in online games, I had already subscribed to a faster internet plan. This is why I expected it to outperform 5G Home Internet. But, what I believe is that 5G Home Internet offers more bandwidth which makes it a suitable option for online gaming.
Work Experience
5G Home Internet
Remote work was the last front I picked to test the two internet types. Before this experiment, I knew 5G Home Internet could easily support online meetings, presentations, or any software or tool that might need an Internet connection. And voila! I was right on the money. I could conduct meetings without any disruptions, and multitask on different software seamlessly.
Cable Internet
I use cable internet at home for my remote work. I won’t say my experience with cable internet is awful. In fact, I have always found cable internet to be a reliable option. That being said, I admit that cable internet is not as fast as 5G Home Internet, but it gets the job done. I can easily join online meetings, use different software, and send large files to my boss.
My Verdict
Although I have used 5G Home Internet and regularly use cable Internet, I can say the prior one is faster. My gaming and work experience on 5G Home Internet was much better than cable internet. However, it will still stick with cable internet for the following reasons:
- For an average internet user like me, cable internet is a viable option. 5G Home Internet is faster, but it is costly too.
- A cable internet can support numerous online activities simultaneously. For instance, I play games, stream movies, and work remotely on cable internet. Even if it slows down, opting for a better plan that offers more speed is an option.
On the other hand, if your household’s internet consumption is huge, or you want to use multiple smart home devices, 5G Home Internet would be a better option.
- The infrastructure of 5G Home internet isn’t as developed as cable internet. And that is one reason why my father has to deal with frequent internet outages. On the other hand, I work remotely and cannot spend a day without an internet connection.
